Is now probably one of my favorite shows.
Bojack Horseman isn’t just a great show, it’s fucking important. In a world where everyone tries to see themselves as a good guy; trying to justify things and paint a picture in their head of how right and good they are, rather than accepting that their actions can have negative affects on the people around them, humility is important. Humility is what helps us grow, it helps people love us, and it helps us realize when we need to change. Without humility we will end up just like Bojack: in our fifties with a life of constant stress and disappointment, because the problems we are constantly creating for ourselves are still there due to our lack of change and growth in our younger years. Upon forced self-reflection through a woman who ghost writes his memoir Bojack sees the person he really is. He realizes that he is self-absorbed, unhappy, unlikable, abusive, and flawed. He hates this reflection, and rather than owning up to it he shrugs it off and tries to make it someone else’s fault. This is what people do every day. They look in the mirror and they refuse to accept that they have the potential to be shit. They try to justify their actions and blame others for their shortcomings, and at the end of the day they remain the same child they’ve always been. You can’t ever grow or become an adult if you’re constantly trying to paint a picture of the person you think you are, and go day-to-day trying to convince people to see the same reflection that you’ve made up in your head. If Bojack Horseman can change and accept his actions then so can everyone else. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow; but at some point we all have to accept that we are shit people who have negatively affected someone, somewhere with our refusal to be humiliated or shamed. We can all change and grow up, but not until we realize that the person we see in the mirror isn’t the big hero we try to create for everyone else. We aren’t these 2-demensional characters who are always perfect. We are relatable, we are complex, and we are flawed. Our willingness to accept that is what makes us likable and able to grow. Bojack Horseman really inspired me. I think that all my followers should check it out when they can. It’s fucking great.
I don’t want to grow up and be like Bojack. I want to be Bojack now, so that in the future I can be the best person that I can be.
